All You Need To Know
All You Need To Know
How does the Scheme Work?
- Your health and goals are assessed and you are given a personalised exercise programme by one of the specially qualifed fitness instructors.
- You attend 4 closely supervised sessions as you get used to your exercise programme. These are booked at reception.
- You then attend supervised sessions with other referrals to follow your personal programme for the first 6 weeks of the scheme, or your instructor may say that you do not need to be supervised for your sessions.
- At roughly midway, your instructor will invite you for another one to one appointment to re-visit your programme and see how you are progressing, to help you to reach your goals
- After 12 weeks, you receive a re-assessment with your instructor and you will both decide upon where to go from there!
How do I join the scheme?
- Firsty talk to your doctor or health professional and ask about joining the scheme. They should have some information and a referral card to give you that the doctor will make notes on and sign, giving his approval for you to undertake an exercise programme.
- If your surgery is not a member of the scheme, contact the leisure centre and let them know. A member of the fitness team will approach the surgery inviting them to participate.
- Contact the leisure centre asking for an initial appointment on the Active Start scheme. The receptionist will make this appointment for you, which will be for an initial assessment.
What will happen at my initial assessment?
- Bring along your referral card from the doctor.
- Wear comfortable clothing and soft soled shoes.
- With the help of your instructor you will complete a health and lifestyle questionnaire.
- A few measurements will be taken, such as blood pressure, and there will be a very simple fitness test.
- Your instructor will help you decide upon which membership may be right for you and help you with the application form, if you would like it.
- Your instructor will book you your next appointment to come back on another day for your first supervised session.
What happens at the supervised sessions?
- Your instructor will take you through your personal exercise programme.
- You will need to attend at least four closely supervised sessions as it takes a while to get used to setting the machines, especially if it is all new to you.
- After the first 4 sessions, you may be signed off by the instructor who will decide whether or not you can use the fitness studio without supervision.
- This will depend upon your medical conditions and how confident you are feeling
- You are welcome to attend the fitness studio just during the supervised sessions if you wish, without the need to book in each time to come. There will be an instructor to assist and support everyone during these times.
Mid Way Review
- After about six weeks you will be asked to come in and see your instructor for your mid way review. Your blood pressure will be taken again and your fitness programme updated.
Final Review
- After about twelve weeks you will come in for your final review. You will have final fitness assessment and the focus will be on what you have achieved and how you feel you have progressed.
- Your instructor will talk to you about where you feel you may go from here! We would love to see you continue exercising, and will help you to achieve your goals both in the short and long term.
