Lords Meadow Refurbishment and Development deferred
Friday, 31 August 2012At the full Council meeting of August 29th, an amendment was passed narrowly to defer a decision on the proposals to refurbish and develop the facilities at Lords Meadow Leisure Centre until an agreement is in place with Queen Elizabeth Academy regarding use of their sports hall for the community through Mid Devon Leisure. This means that the proposals will need to be presented at a later date at full Council, that meets about every two months.
At the full Council Meeting it was made very clear by Community and Well Being Portfolio holder Councillor Bob Deed that in order to maximise the income potential of the centre by upgrading tired facilities and increasing provision for fitness redevelopment was necessary. The centre has already made expenditure cutbacks and with some reinvestment has the potential to increase income by meeting the increased demand for fitness classes and studio equipment. The alternative may be that in the coming years come difficult decisions regarding more severe cutbacks in the service may have to be made.
The refurbishment scheme includes upgrading carpets and walls, replacing the flooring in the pool changing areas, increasing car parking, upgrading the old changing rooms on the dry side of the building and increasing fitness facilities. A new fitness studio is proposed, with new state of the art equipment and bespoke free weights section, a Spinning Studio, a Meeting/Training Room and a climate controlled, sprung floor multipurpose room for fitness classes, club use, junior activities to name but a few activities that it would cater for. Traditional hall court sports would no longer be catered for at that site, but at Queen Elizabeth Academy site, Crediton.
