Stage 1
1. ENTER THE WATER SAFELY
Choice of entry in include: use of ladder/step approach (walk in), swivel and lower entry, use of disability hoist. Participants may have the aid of a Level 1 support teacher.
2. MOVE FORWARDS FOR A DISTANCE OF 5 METRES
Travel may be with or without aids, equipment or support. Walking or paddle. In deep or shallow water.
3. MOVE BACKWARDS FOR A DISTANCE OF 5 METRES
Travel may be with or without aids, equipment or support. Walking or paddle. In deep or shallow water.
4. MOVE SIDEWAYS FOR DISTANCE OF 5 METRES
Travel may be with or without aids, equipment or support. Walking or paddle. In deep or shallow water.
5. SCOOP THE WATER AND WASH FACE
Demonstration must show scooping the water in an activity whilst remaining calm throughout.
6. BE AT EASE WITH WATER SHOWERED FROM OVERHEAD
Showering may be achieved in a teacher led activity e.g. showering water (use of watering can or similar equipment) whilst participants walk under it comfortably.
7. MOVE INTO A STRETCHED FLOATING POSITION USING AIDS, EQUIPMENT OR SUPPORT
A variety of ways may be used to demonstrate this including: Hands on floor (as in along steps), floats, arm bands, equipment such as floats, hands holding wall or use of a Level 1 support teacher may aid the participant.
8. REGAIN AN UPRIGHT POSITION FROM ON THE BACK, WITH SUPPORT
Use of floats/wall/poolside or support teacher may be used to assist. Starting position must be horizontal stretched position on the back and the finishing position is a vertical position.
9. REGAIN AN UPRIGHT POSITION ON THE FRONT WITH SUPPORT
Start position must be from face in the water. Use of floats/wall/poolside or support teacher may be used to assist. Finishing position is for the participant to be in a vertical position.
10. PUSH AND GLIDE IN A HORIZONTAL POSITION TO OR FROM A WALL
Face and head either in or close to surface of water throughout. Start from a wall on front/back/face in/face out with arms to the side or above the head. Participant may choose to perform the movement towards a wall as well as from a wall.
11. TAKE PART IN A TEACHER LED PARTNER ORIENTATED GAME
The game devised by the teacher or through NPTS support resources must involve participants working in partners or small groups exploring buoyancy and balance in the water.
12. DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF POOL RULES
Led by teacher with children responding. Example may be practising the emergency exit procedure on alarm sounding – voice over to suggest this practise on the 5th week of the term for example. Other examples include children showing an understanding of basic pool rules, such as ‘No Running’ etc.
13. EXIT THE WATER SAFELY
Participant may make use of: ladder or steps, beach pool approach, climbing or use of Level 1 support teacher to assist, or use of disability hoist.
