Lifeguarding, First Aid, Teaching swimming
Mid Devon Leisure offers courses and qualifications in it’s leisure centres. The approved training centres offer industry standard, recognised courses leading to approved qualifications to teach life saving skills both in and out of the water to enable you to respond in emergency situations involving children and adults. Not only are these very useful life skills, but provide qualifications to help you to progress or start a whole new career. You may prefer to become a teacher of the aquatic disciplines, and the level 1 and 2 courses provided are a great way to start.
National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is recognised world wide and is a course for strong swimmers aged 16 years+ who meet the entry requirements to enable future work as a pool lifeguard. Specific to swimming pools, this qualification covers first aid, recovery and spinal injury, to name a few areas. It also includes how to work as part of a lifeguard team, communication, rescue equipment and first aid. Part 2 of the course will be specific to the site at which the course is held.

A non-returnable deposit of £50.00 is required one month prior to the course starting.

First Aid at Work
The Emergency First Aid for Appointed Persons is a one day course teaching the essential skills to respond to a variety of first aid situations. First aiders are trained to preserve life, prevent conditions worsening and promote recovery and the early attention of a first aider could make the difference between life and death. Cardio pulmonary resuscitation and incident management are key areas of training, the course also including specifics such as treatment of burns, scalds, sprains, choking and what to do if someone is suspected as having a heart attack.

The First Aid at Work is a four day course that goes into more depth of incident management, casualty management and recognising and treating a wide range of conditions. The Health and Safety Executive recommends that all businesses have one or more first aider with one of these qualifications, details of which can be found on the HSE website.

FIRST AID AT WORK ANNUAL REFRESHER
This half day session updates the current holders of the Emergency at Work certificate with current procedures and refreshes information and techniques learned on their initial course. Dates will follow - but if your are interested please contact the appropriate centre to register your interest.
The first aid courses can be delivered to groups of six or more at your work location for in-house training. There are also discounts offered for group bookings, full details of which can be obtained on application.
ASA Level 1 Teaching Aquatics
At Lords Meadow Leisure Centre. The course leads to a vocational qualification designed to provide you with an introduction to the knowledge, skills and understanding of the safe and ethical principles for effective teaching practices in aquatics. As an aspiring teacher this qualification will equip you with the knowledge and tools to actively support a more senior qualified, experienced teacher of aquatics, at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session.

ASA Level 2 Teaching Aquatics
At Lords Meadow Leisure Centre. This course follows the level 1 qualification leading to a vocational qualification designed for you to learn how to effectively apply your skills, knowledge and understanding in teaching aquatics. This aims to provide you with the skills, knowledge, tools and techniques to effectively plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate aquatic teaching sessions.
